Can't do right for doing wrong
There are some murmerings about a food crisis...prices are increasing as resources become less available, both to us in the west and those in developing countries that actually produce it. What is going on?
Apparently our demand for biofuels is challenging land use, shifting it from food to fuel. Greater revenues can be achieved from fuel, and we're not so fussy what it looks like, as long as it is functional so farmers switch their manufacturing practices. And we thought we were helping. (I say we losely, I don't know anyone who powers anything on biofuel, though I think oil companies are blending it into Petrol and Diesel...)
What is the answer? We have an ever-growing population, demanding more and more from the planet, is all this effort to be 'green' just a guess at what might be better than what we're doing now. As we try to reduce our carbon footprints and plant trees, there seems to me no right way.
Scary stuff.
